When I was a little girl You Are My Sunshine was my favorite song. I loved the tune, the words, the cheeriness. And then I grew up and learned that the verses were horribly, unthinkably sad. Beyond sad. They bordered on vengeful, despairing, depressed, and angry. Talk about a shock.

But I still loved the chorus. That catchy, happy chorus. Unfortunately I couldn't sing the chorus without thinking about the verses. So, I rewrote them. And as was typical, I inserted a message about God. How could I not?
